“You have five minutes.”
If you are reading this, I’m
pretty sure you have already invested five minutes in community just in
searching and reading on the Internet. 5
minute community is all about defeating the idea that we have no time for community.
We do.
What I want to do here is
provide ideas for things you can do in five minutes to strengthen your
investment in community. Here’s the
first one.
Sit down.
You may be able to do this
today. Some time today, you may encounter someone who is not particularly busy.
Saying hello to them would be wonderful – and an example of 5 second community
(maybe I should start a topic on that too). Anyway, keep an eye open today, and
if you do, don’t be surprised if you get a tug inside to just sit and talk with
someone for a moment.
The sitting is actually key
here. Why? It’s the bow on a present. When we sit with someone, we are
expressing an investment of time – a moment – when our lives are stopped and
focused on someone else. You can get up again, and in less than five minutes. But
if you think of how you would feel if someone came and sat with you for a
moment, for no specific reason, it would provide you all the motivation you
need to do it yourself.
Over time, I’ll add more 5
minute and 5 second community ideas, but come on… please, please, please… you
must have some ideas of your own. Please
post them in a comment here and I will happily convert them into posts.
