Write a real letter

By Rich Luker

When was the last time you got a real letter from someone? Ok, you can’t count holiday letters. I mean just a good old fashioned letter about nothing in particular that came on paper and was delivered in the mail.

How did that feel to you? If you are like me, it felt really great. In fact, I think it feels better now than it did when the mail was a dominant way we stayed in touch with family and friends. When you get a letter today, you are holding something tangible in your hands from someone who cared enough about you to take the time and go to the trouble to write and mail it.

Here’s the thing.  How much trouble is it?  Really. Last week I did the hardest part – and it was easy. I went to the office store, bought 500 sheets of copy paper and had them cut it in half so I now have 1,000 sheets of paper 4 ¼ by 6 ½.  I also bought envelopes that would hold paper that size. Now, all I have to do is write!  I get a choice, write by hand (and nobody will be able to read it) or type it up and print it. Either way I am ready to go. And I am looking forward to a year of letter writing.

When was the last time you wrote someone a note and sent it by the mail?

Doesn’t both sides of that – sending and receiving real letters – sound pretty good?

LOVE receiving real letters in the mail. This is a wonderful idea, Rich. I had an uncle (in Florida - was a favorite relative of mine) and he and I exchanged wonderful letters for years. I still have them. I couldn't part with them and find them precious memories of a cherished person who is no longer with me. He and I had conversations that nobody else in the family shared. Yes. This sounds very good.
